Subject: Luna (aka Doggy, Little Puppy, Little Pooper, Poopy ).
Classification: Co-resident. Best friend.
Times she showed up: Two.
Status: HOME 💕
I arrived in September 2020. Luna was already here, waiting – though she would not have described it that way. She does not describe things. She mostly sleeps, eats, and remakes her bed for several minutes before sleeping again.
But I am getting ahead of myself. Luna’s story starts before mine. It starts in the rain, in Florida, outside a house that was not her home – with a small, matted, very determined little dog who had decided she knew exactly where she was supposed to be.
She just hadn’t found it yet. 💕
Background: Before She Was My Sister 🌧️
It was 2016. My human had recently lost her dad. She was not handling it well. She had her cat Rocket – a good and loyal companion who had been keeping her company through the grief, as cats do.
She also had a friend who had a roommate – the owner of Carlos, a Rottweiler who would later become one of Luna’s best friends. One day, that roommate spotted a small dog walking around outside in the rain. He tried to catch her. She disappeared.
And then, one day, she showed up at his doorstep.
She was in bad shape. Hair matted. Skin and bones. Full of hookworms, though no one knew that yet. She had been roaming near the river – among the alligators, as Florida tends to provide – and she had clearly been out there for a while.
But she had made it to that doorstep. And she was done wandering. 💕

The First Time She Chose Her Human 🐕
Upon arriving at one of her so-called “safety meetings” at the friend and roommate’s house, my human was greeted by Carlos greeted at the door, as usual.
She was also greeted by this small, scruffy, very insistent little thing.
“What is this thing?” my human asked. She was joking. She knew it was a dog. But she also knew, immediately, that this dog had already made a decision about her.
Luna attached herself to her immediately. The way some dogs do – not asking, not waiting, just deciding. You. It’s you. I’ve been looking for you.
They asked if she wanted to take her. She said she couldn’t really afford her, but would think about it anyway (then went home and ordered a tiny harness and leash). She started imagining Luna and Rocket becoming friends, keeping each other company while she was at work. Rocket had lost his brother, Comet, a couple of years before, and had been alone for some time. The timing felt right.

And then the roommate found the owner. So, Luna went back home.
My human was relieved and heartbroken at the same time. She was living paycheck-to-cash-advance-to-paycheck. She had no idea how she was going to afford a high-maintenance little dog. Maybe it was for the best.
The leash and harness sat unused. 💕
The Second Time She Showed Up 🐾
Luna showed up at that doorstep again.
The roommate had warned the owner: if he saw her roaming again, he wasn’t giving her back. And there she was. Back. Like she had somewhere to be and she was tired of waiting to get there. And like she hadn’t been cared for upon returning home.
My human brought her home and gave her a bath. Blow-dried her. Brushed her out. Took her to the vet, where they discovered the hookworms, and got her treated (and eventually got her a haircut).

And then Rocket and Luna met.
They became best friends immediately. Every day when my human came home from work and let Luna out of her kennel, she would hear their little paws running around together. But every time she tried to come out and catch them playing, they would stop – as if the game only existed when no one was watching.
They didn’t mind her finding them cuddling butt-to-butt, though 💕

Luna was living her best life. She was eating properly. She was filling out – no more skin and bones. And she had found her human(s). She had found her home. She had found her first of many best friends.
She showed up twice to make sure of it. 💕🐾
Official Assessment from Sammy 🐈
I have reviewed the complete intelligence file on Luna.
She is a Yorkie. She is small. She is blind now, and old, and she wears pajamas in the winter and has no idea how cute she looks in them.

She remakes her bed several times before sleeping.
And she smiles on command:

She requires feeding every 2-3 hours, and I usually eat with her for the first and last meals of the day. Her food includes pumpkin, carrots, and sweet potatoes, which is why her tongue is always orange. It’s also always hanging out of her mouth (because she doesn’t have many teeth left).

Luna all loopy after having most of her teeth removed – no more “Princess Thunderbreath” 😹
She whines when she can’t sense a human nearby. She has a stuffed Rottweiler named Carlos who sleeps with her.

She showed up twice for the same humans. She crossed paths with alligators and came out the other side. She waited until the right door opened.
I respect this. I would never say that out loud.
When I arrived in September 2020, she sat on the couch and looked at me. I sat and looked at her.

By December, we were cuddling side-by-side.

By sometime after that, we were sleeping butt-to-butt, which I maintain was entirely her idea.

She is my best friend. I check on her when no one is watching. This is not documented anywhere officially.

She showed up twice. I’m glad she did. 💕🐾
