Suspects: Two (2) Mallard ducks, one (1) nest, approximately twelve (12) eggs.
Sammy’s status: Standing down. Reluctantly.
Case status: ONGOING 👀
⚠️ Case File Update: This investigation has entered a new phase. The following contains significant developments. Sammy’s position on ducks has been formally revised. 🦆🥚
I have been conducting surveillance on the local duck population since the beginning of my patrol career in this neighborhood. The details are documented in previous case files. I will not be summarizing them here. You can read them yourself.
What I will say is this: I was not expecting what happened on April 5, 2026. 🦆
Operations One Through 4: The Duck Sightings
It was the morning of March 10, 2026. The first time I spotted a duck in my part of the neighborhood – the field dotted with pine trees that serves as my backyard. We don’t spot too many ducks around these parts – they’re usually by the pond of the neighboring complex. This was suspect.
I dropped into full surveillance mode immediately. Low to the ground. Ears forward. Eyes locked on the target across the open field. I began my approach. Slow. Calculated. Professional.
And then I ran at her. Full speed.
She flew away. I stood in the empty field and considered what had just happened.
This became a pattern.
Operation One – March 10, 8:58 a.m. Lone duck spotted through a pine tree. My human thought she flew away. She had not. I got closer to confirm. Then I began the hunt. She flew away.
Operation Two – March 11, 8:54 a.m. Same duck. Same operation. Same outcome.
Operation Three – Date unknown, shortly after Operation Two. She brought a male. Same operation. Same outcome.
Operation Four – March 22, pre-dawn patrol near the neighboring complex pond. I may have been in their jurisdiction. There was a Private Property sign. I did not care. Same operation. Same outcome – except this time, my position was loudly broadcasted by a very vocal suspect.
Four operations. Four identical outcomes. I had not yet determined what I would do if I actually caught one. This remained a minor operational detail to be addressed in due course. 🦆🐾

Operation Five: She’s Making Babies 🥚
April 5, 2026. Morning patrol. I was equipped with my body camera for POV documentation. We came around the corner of the back field. And there she was.
The female duck. Hiding under a tree. She was not alone – the male was nearby. I assessed the situation. I began my approach. Slow. Professional. Calculated.
My human said, and I quote: “Let’s leave her be. I think she’s making babies!”
I was taken inside. The investigation was temporarily suspended. 🙊
Note on the body camera footage: The recording button was accidentally stopped before the stalking sequence was captured. The footage was lost. I have no comment on this. The loss is significant. 😢🐾
Operation Six: The Lone Egg 🥚
April 6, 2026. Morning patrol. I located a lone egg in the field under a pine tree. I was heading toward it for investigation purposes.

I was redirected. Both ducks were present and watching from a distance. My human took me inside. What followed, I did not personally witness. But the intelligence report is as follows:
My human returned to the field alone to get a better look at the lone egg.

Then, she located the full nest nearby. Approximately twelve eggs, lined with down feathers, tucked under a tree.

She relocated the lone egg to the nest using a paper towel – no direct contact, to preserve the scent situation.
Twelve eggs. I counted them in the photographs. Twelve. 🥚🥚🥚
Revised Official Position on the Duck 🦆
I have spent considerable time reviewing this new intelligence.
The duck is not merely a duck. She is a mother. She has been building a nest and guarding her eggs in the back field this whole time. She was not hiding from me. She was protecting something.

I respect this. I understand what it means to protect something. I check on Luna every night when no one is watching. This is not documented anywhere officially.
The duck and I have more in common than I previously assessed. I would not have predicted this outcome at the start of this investigation. 🦆🐾
What Happens Next 👀
Mallard eggs hatch approximately 28 days after the last egg is laid. The first duck sighting was the morning of March 11, 2026. My human has done the math. We may have ducklings in the neighborhood by this weekend 🐣🐣🐣🐣🐣🐣🐣🐣🐣🐣🐣🐣
I have been asked to maintain a respectful distance from the nest. I have agreed to these terms. Provisionally.
The investigation is not closed. It has been reclassified. This is no longer a surveillance operation.
This is a welfare watch. 🦆🥚🐾

Official Verdict 🐾
Duck: not a threat.

Eggs: approximately twelve.
Lone egg: reunited with nest.
Body camera footage: lost to history.
